I cannot remember now what possessed me to write an arrangement of The Third Man for tuba ensemble. I think I must have been trying to showcase a normally unheralded section of the massed bands during the 1999 RAF tour.
The tune, also known as The Harry Lime Theme, was written and performed by Anton Karas on the zither for the soundtrack to the film The Third Man (1949). The tune was a big success, topping the U.S. charts for eleven weeks and it gave birth to the idea of releasing film themes as singles.
Obviously a tuba ensemble sounds nothing like a zither, but could be considered to have similar novelty value!
