Side Saddle

This arrangement was made for the Central Band of the RAF for a concert in 2000 at which the composer, Russ Conway was present. It is hard to imagine now that a pianist could be a pop star but Conway was hugely successful in the late 1950s and early 1960s, selling more than 30 million records, having 17 consecutive top-20 hits and his own television shows.

His biggest hit was Side Saddle, in 1959. Before the RAF concert I remember wondering whether it was worth the effort to make this arrangement for what was likely to be a once-only performance but he wrote a most appreciative letter saying how much he had enjoyed hearing it. He was not to live much longer and in retrospect I was thankful to have made the gesture.
