Jean-Philippe Rameau (1683-1764) is mainly remembered today as an influential musical theorist. This is a shame because, during his time, he was renowned as a composer of considerable melodic and harmonic inventiveness.
In 1725 he was intrigued by a visit to Paris of two native Americans from Louisiana and later wrote a harpsichord piece entitled Les Sauvages (The Savages). He re-used it in a ballet scene in his opera-ballet Les Indes Galantes as the Dance of the Peace Pipe. The piece became incredibly popular in France and its appeal lasted throughout the 18th century. This arrangement remains true to the spirit of the music while taking a contemporary look at it.
